Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these drugs must be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication report a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
