Individuals who endured abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed fresh optimism following their initial encounter with the new Pope at the Vatican.

The board president, heading the anti-abuse organization, commented that the Pope's decision to engage with them so soon in his leadership sent a strong message about his dedication to addressing the issue.

Global Zero-Tolerance Policy Advocated

The group is advocating for a worldwide zero-tolerance policy that would permanently remove any clergy member who confesses to or is proven of abusing a child. This approach has already been adopted in the US.

The Pope recognized that there is "resistance in some parts of the globe" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we acknowledged that there is resistance," they remarked.

Legacy Issue

The new Pope, who took the role in spring, has taken on this longstanding problem that has plagued the Catholic Church for decades.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an historic summit on paedophilia within the Church and revisions to church laws to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Personal Connection

For the representative, who prefers gender-neutral pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the policy is personal. The North American activist revealed they were abused by a clergy member who was subsequently transferred between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his papacy, because we aim to work with him," they stated. "We have the same goal, we seek to eliminate abuse by religious officials."

Historic Meeting

Multiple members of the coalition, which represents victims and supporters from more than 30 countries, met with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The discussion, originally scheduled for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was described as "quite empathetic" when hearing the story of a woman abused at a Catholic residential school for native youth in Canada.

Hickey noted the leader was "compassionate" about their own story and seemed "modest, humorous, and very down to earth."

"Victims have consistently sought a voice in discussions and I didn't perceive like he was making empty promises," Hickey stated. "I felt like he was genuine, practical, and receptive and keen to work with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The group is hoping that changes to church regulations will facilitate the implementation of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have consulted experts and gathered documents that they will submit to Pope Leo.

"He appeared engaged in reviewing it," Hickey remarked.

Accountability Highlighted

A recent Vatican-commissioned report emphasized the "necessity of a streamlined protocol for the resignation and/or dismissal of religious officials or personnel in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The document also noted that survivors consistently emphasized the "urgent need for church leaders and major superiors to be held accountable for inaction and cover-up."

Path Ahead

Hickey shared they told the Pope at the beginning of their meeting: "This represents as much a risk for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

After the encounter, Hickey expressed optimism for progress.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, coming together and establishing a relationship and persisting to strengthen that bond is a move in the right direction," they commented.

Hickey concluded that they told with Pope Leo: "Just because it's a difficult period, I feel like we can change how the story concludes - he valued that."
